About

Timothy Ryan Day is a writer, teacher, cook and restaurateur based in Madrid. He is the author of the novels Outside Athens (Adelaide 2024) and Big Sky (Adelaide 2020), the Academic monograph Shakespeare and the Evolution of the Human Umwelt (Routledge 2021), and the poetry collection Green & Grey (Lemon Street Press 2019). Waiting for Tom co-written with Kip Tobin was a quarter finalist in The American Zoetrope screenplay contest. Current projects include a memoir, a novel, and a cookbook. His writing, translations, and reviews have appeared in Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, Green Letters, Ecozon@, La Revista Pan, The Toucan, The Nervous Breakdown, The Madrid Metropolitan, and Vaya Madrid, amongst others. He has upcoming chapters in two books on food and literature.

As a cook and restauranteur he co-founded a series of restaurants in Madrid including Tierra Burrito (no longer affiliated), The Toast Cafe, Roll Madrid, Slow Mex, Palma Brew, The Toast Tavern, The Village Tap Room, and The Toast Malasaña. He continues in an advisory roll at Grupo Bang Bang where he shares his passion for fermentation, local products, and cultural events.

He was born in Tulsa, grew up in Chicago, and has lived in Texas, Georgia, Colorado, Iowa, Arizona, China and Spain. He currently works as Associate Professor at Saint Louis University’s Madrid Campus where he teaches Shakespeare, Writing, and Ecocriticism.
